lacey refused to speak to margo the rest of the time they spent sat in algoe. she didn’t regret that until they were halfway home. but by then, it was too late. while in a sense, she felt liberated knowing that now she no longer was at the will of margo and becca, she also felt hopelessly lost. after years of having a place in high school, she was not only alone with three of the biggest (goodhearted) nerds she’d known, but preparing to abandon them as well. it was isolating, and set a rather dismal tone to the beginning of her first summer as a high school graduate.
as for ben, their relationship was rather short lived. he was a sweet guy, that much didn’t change, but she realized that perhaps what she liked wasn’t him, but the fact that he treated her like a person. under the guise of wanting to simplify a potential long-distance relationship, she ended it, and with that, she all but cut her ties to orlando by the time she left for dartmouth.
the one exception? she left her im intact for quentin, though she wouldn’t admit that. he’s comforting to her, call it a human security blanket effect for now, but there’s a sort of disappointment they both understand. and while there may be something more in her feelings for him, she’s not about to play second fiddle to margo again, especially when she abandoned them.
❛ two words: catholic school. if you’re lucky, you meet a nice eighteen-year old one who still has her entire life in front of her, but she marries god to prove a point to her folks or something. but it’s like, she’s an eighteen year old girl. ‘course she’s going to be horny. and lord knows every chick in the school rolled their skirt when the old hags weren’t looked and damn, do we all know how hot knee socks are. ❜
❛ then she’s not a nun. she’s like, a nun in waiting. i don’t buy that you broke the CHASTITY of a nun. she was probably just trying to live it up before resigning to a life of celibacy and criticizing teenagers. catholic school or not, i think that’s what we’re all up to, ESSENTIALLY. but i will be making note of the knee socks thing. good to know. ❜
leo sort of cared about angela’s feelings on the matter, but at the same time, he was entitled to happiness.
❛you don’t care at all? like, not even a little bit? are you sure she would, though? ha, ha, how FUNNY.❜he quips just before she’s pressing her lips against his once more. brows furrow in frustration as she speaks again. ❛i’m trying to be serious, y’know. what are we gonna do if she finds out ??❜
❛i mean.. i CARE, yeah, but i don’t think it’s that big of a deal. we’re happy, she should be happy. simple as that.❜she nods. ❛i’m tired of sacrificing what i want to accomidate people i’m habitually unable to please. if she find our, we’ll just have to TACKLE it then. but we’re good now, and that’s that.❜
❛Lacey, it’s become very, very clear that this war will NEVER be won unless we adopt BETTER tactics. So, here: I’ll read your book about love & heart-wrenching pain, if, in EXCHANGE, you will read MY novel about honor & sacrifice. Then, we evaluate.❜
❛ya learn these hard hitting tactics from your fancy war porn?? you SWEAR you’ll read it??none of that spark notes crap?? because i don’t take deals like this lightly, i’m afraid.❜
